A large inland sea situated at the south-eastern extremity of Europe. It is bordered by Ukraine to the north, Russia to the northeast, Georgia to the east, Turkey to the south, and Bulgaria and Romania to the west.

“from the Black Sea” is a photographic exhibition in Abertillery, Wales, presenting works by artists from the Black Sea region. Apart from the quality of their work, the reason for choosing to feature photographers from that part of Europe is the low level of familiarity amongst the public with art and artists from those countries. The South, East and South-East of Europe is often mentioned in the media for political or economic reasons, usually in the context of migration, but contemporary fine art coming from that area is often overlooked. Through this exhibition, we would like to attract attention to the creativity and talent of a new generation of artists from an area that is still considered by some the “New Europe”.

“from the Black Sea” is the fourth event organised by the*kickplate*project, an initiative to bring high-quality international art to people who are not the target audience of art. The exhibition was organised with financial support from the Arts Council of Wales.
